SEATLLE — Amazon.com Inc. announced its plans this week for WorkMail, a new email and calendar service specifically for businesses, according to the Wall Street Journal.

With WorkMail, Amazon aims to acquire some of the business-email market that is controlled primarily by Microsoft with its Outlook software.

“Customers are not happy with their current email solution,” Amazon Marketing Vice President Adam Selipsky said in the article. “A lot of customers feel those solutions are expensive and complex.”

Amazon aims to make the new application more user-friendly than other business email applications by allowing users to run other email applications, like Outlook, through WorkMail to help them adapt to the new application.

WorkMail also will offer more security than other interfaces by running though Amazon’s computer networks where emails will be encrypted and scrambled, as well as storing email only in designated geographic regions, limiting access by high-hacking areas.
