COLUMBUS, OH — There is welcomed news for asthma and allergy sufferers, as the results from a new study confirm that professional steam cleaning significantly reduces the number of allergens in carpets and other textiles, according to a press release.

stanley steemerThe study, which was released during the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), found that the Stanley Steemer deep cleaning process removes up to 97 percent of surface allergens, the release stated.

"These numbers are very impressive and validate the need for people to understand what a thorough cleaning can accomplish for asthma and allergy sufferers," said Dr. Bruce Mitchell, study author and chief executive officer (CEO) of Airmid Healthgroup, an independent biomedical research organization.

"Patients can certainly find relief from reduced allergen levels when combining a Stanley Steemer cleaning every three to four months, along with vacuuming at least twice a week with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtered vacuum," Mitchell added.

According to the release, the study evaluated air and surface samples taken before and after hot water extraction in 20 U.S. homes, with additional findings revealing successful removal of 67 percent of airborne cat allergens as well.

The study also found the Stanley Steemer process effectively reduces exposure to bacteria and mold — two triggers for an allergic reaction, including asthma, the release noted.

Editor's Note: Although this study focused on residential carpet and upholstery cleaning, comparable results are achieveable by employing similar deep cleaning techniques to textiles in commercial environemts. Moreover, because many restorative carpet and upholstery cleanings are outsourced to dedicated professionals, the findings of this study are compelling and intriguing for service professionals in any environment.
