Colorado reviewing asbestos regulations

DENVER, CO — Colorado's Reg 8, the regulation in place for the monitoring and removal of materials containing asbestos, is under review and undergoing editing and changes, according to the Examiner.

asbestosThe regulation is currently undergoing changes that will affect consultants, contractors, the restoration industry and any other industry that may deal with construction materials, including plumbers, electricians and developers, the article stated.

According to the article, not everyone who has dealings with asbestos wants Reg 8 to continue, as there are many in the restoration and remodeling industries who would like the regulation to go away.

In the event that Reg 8 were to be discontinued, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, as well as those of the U.S. Occupational Health And Safety Administration (OSHA), would still remain in effect, the article noted.

The biggest problem with this alternative regulatory agency is oversight and enforcement, as both agencies are often overworked, stretched thin and must put their focus on bigger cases, which could lead to unsafe work practices and a higher risks to public health, the article added.
