IICRC Launches Mold Uncovered Campaign

LAS VEGAS—May 11, 2022—The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) recently announced its new Mold Uncovered campaign. Mold is a pervasive yet largely unregulated issue in the United States with just a handful of states requiring accredited certification for remediators. The IICRC campaign emphasizes the importance of proper mold remediation through accredited industry standards and certifications.

Left unchecked, mold issues in indoor environments can have significant, lasting health impacts. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the rise in extreme weather conditions associated with climate change have led and will continue to lead to more growth of indoor fungi and mold. Moreover, according to the  United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mold exposure can lead to upper respiratory issues, especially among children and those with immune suppression or respiratory disease.

Why accreditation matters

In the face of this increasing threat, accredited standards and certifications are essential to ensuring that mold remediation is performed correctly. The Mold Uncovered site features an interactive map that tracks which states have taken legislative or regulatory action incorporating accredited standards and certifications, and which are falling behind. The website also features recommended legislative language.

“Mold issues continue to destroy healthy homes and displace families,” said Michael Dakduk, IICRC president and CEO. “Virtually every state in the U.S. requires individuals to attain a license to cut hair. We need the same level of commitment to mold remediation and mold assessments. Lawmakers must take action by adopting accredited standards and certifications.”
