If you have arrived in 2021 and are still asking, “What’s a podcast?” then this may not be the article for you.

Many entrepreneurs find podcasts to be a great use of their windshield time as they drive from job to job or sit in traffic. Similar to the rise and appeal of audio books, podcasts can be a great way to expand your mind while going about your everyday tasks. For those who are looking to grow their careers, grow their businesses, or encourage their teams, what podcasts can speak to the property restoration professionals? I’m glad you asked and hope to help you answer that question with the content of this article. Below is a list of the restoration and cleaning service-based podcasts that we are aware of that provide value from professionals in our industry who have seen a thing or two and can help challenge, encourage, and inspire your growth.

IAQ Radio

IAQ Radio is the OG of property restoration web-based audio content. Joe “Radio Joe” Hughes and Cliff “The Z Man” Zlotnik host the show, which is recorded live every Friday at noon. Every week they interview experts from the indoor air quality, building sciences, and disaster restoration industry.

Both hosts have extensive backgrounds in the industry and draw from a laundry list of key characters who have helped grow our industry into what it is today. If you want to hear from historical figures in the property restoration space, IAQ Radio is the catalogue.

Recent guests on IAQ Radio include:

  • Detente between RIA and IICRC with Mark Springer and Kevin Pearson
  • Panel discussion on COVID-19 cleaning with Ed Cross, John Downey, Andy Ask, and Richard Sims
  • John Downey of the Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI)

The GMS Podcast

You would be hard pressed to find a person in the property restoration industry who doesn’t like Gerrett Stier. He started out working in his family electrical construction company when he found a need in the property restoration industry for temporary power distribution boxes.

Stier launched his business, GMS Distribution, in the middle of the 2008 recession and hasn’t looked back. He recently launched The GMS Podcast, and his genuine interest in grasping the unique services that his guests provide makes for a great discussion.

Recent guests on The GMS Podcast include:

  • Ben Justesen of Enlightened Restoration Solutions and Just Right Cleaning and Construction (JRCC)
  • Jeff Cross, Editorial Director of ISSA Media, former editor of Cleanfax, and the host of Straight Talk (see below)

Blue Collar Nation Podcast

Eric “The Tech Whisperer” Sprague and Larry “Pineapple Man” Wilberton built their business, Shamrock Restoration, from scratch, learned their leadership lessons the hard way, and were able to sell their company at a profit. They now focus their efforts on helping business owners and company leaders with the pillars of success that they learned while in the trenches of their business.

In addition to their Blue Collar Nation Podcast, they offer Morning Tech Meeting and have recently started Blue Collar Nation Radio, which is a 24/7 collection of content for service-based businesses.

Recent Guests on the Blue Collar Nation Podcast include:

  • Former Shamrock office manager, Lesley Barragan, who started with no industry experience and has gone on to build a thriving career
  • Jon Isaacson from The DYOJO Podcast
  • The pain of entrepreneurship with Eric and Larry

The DYOJO Podcast

The Do Your Job Dojo (DYOJO) Podcast attempts to bridge that gap between information and entertainment, what I as “The Intentional Restorer,” call infotainment. The DYOJO Podcast brings entertaining and inspiring guests who will help you laugh and learn as you shorten your learning curve in the property restoration industry.

While I consider myself a mediocre host, at best, I attract a surprising number of quality guests for the video and audio experience.

Recent guests on The DYOJO Podcast include:

  • Rachel Stewart, executive vice president of Titan Restoration of Arizona, author of Unqualified Success, and founder of Xcelerate Restoration Software
  • Skylar Lewis, CEO of Superior Restoration and founder of Rise Up Kings
  • Eric Sprague from Blue Collar Nation Podcast and Morning Tech Meeting

The Claim Clinic

The Claim Clinic is the podcast of Andrew McCabe, author of The 24 Hour Tech. This podcast from the Godfather of Remote Estimating focuses on the nuances of insurance claims and property restoration with a variety of guests from multiple disciplines. The Claim Clinic is a master class of education for insurance claims professionals, “Through interviews with legendary disaster recovery experts.”

Recent guests on The Claim Clinic include:

  • COVID-19 with CIH John Evans
  • Jon Isaacson “The Intentional Restorer”
  • The real deal on \ customized price lists

Straight Talk!

Straight Talk! is a webcast from Jeff Cross, the editorial director of ISSA Media, which also produces Cleanfax as well as Cleaning and Maintenance magazine. Straight Talk! digs into issues of the restoration and carpet cleaning industry, as well as the larger cleaning industry, providing how-to tips, marketing and management advice, news, trending topics, and more. Plans are currently underway to offer the webseries as its own restoration and cleaning service-based podcast in 2021.

Recent guests on Straight Talk! include:

Pro vs. Joe Podcast

Pro vs. Joe is a podcast within The DYOJO Podcast. Bryan Close, the “Joe,” is not new to construction, but his company All American Real Estate Services (Tacoma, Wash.) is pivoting to focus a significant portion of their business on water and fire damage repairs. He is new to the nuances of the industry and reached out to me, the “Pro,” to assist him and his partner Brandon through this process.

For those new to the industry, this podcast offers a crash course in building your business. On the other hand, those who have been in the industry for some time, will find the conversation re-ignites passion for the good work that our teams do day-in and day-out.

Recent topics on Pro vs. Joe include:

  • PVJ 004 Motivating your team with vision
  • PVJ 003 The growing pains of a young business
  • PVJ 002 Powering up with good partnerships
